Chocolate Math

This blog post was submitted by Micaela. Right as I opened her email a friend rang my doorbell and had an article about chocolate. How cool is that! I think I’ll go have a piece of chocolate while you figure this out.

YOUR AGE BY CHOCOLATE MATH

          This is pretty neat.

DON’T CHEAT BY SCROLLING DOWN FIRST!

It takes less than a minute.

Work this out as you read…

Be sure you don’t read the bottom until you’ve worked it out!

This is not one of those, waste of time things.

It’s fun.

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate (more than once but less than 10).

.

.

.

.

2. Multiply this by 2 (just to be bold) .

.

.

.

.

3. Add 5.

.

.

.

.

.

4. Multiply it by 50 — I’ll wait while you get your calculator. (See if you can do it mentally. It’s not that difficult if you think of 50 as half of 100).

.

.

.

.

.

.

5. If you have already had your birthday this year, add 1756 …

If you haven’t, add 1755.

.

.

.

.

.

6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.

.

.

You should have a three digit number.

The first digit of this year was your original number (i.e. how many times you want to have chocolate each week).

The second two numbers are YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it is!!!!)

.

.

.

.

.

This is the only year (2006) it will ever work, so spread it around while it lasts.

Can you figure out why it works? We’d love to hear your comments.

This is way cool! Almost as cool as Napoleon. I think the reason why it works is in the 1756/1757 part, and the year you were born. Of course, it’s just lots of fancy tricks to cloud up one problem: 2006-the year you were born+the # of times you want to eat chocolate times 100. But it’s still pretty amazing–it works almost as well as Nappy with the big hat.

WOW MS. NEWBURN this was even cool for my dad. You should really show every one how it works.

  3. […] A little while ago I sent out a puzzle submitted by Micaela called Chocolate Math. If you can explain how it works, I’ll give you some chocolate. (Open to the first 3 who can explain it). The puzzle and offer expire at the end of 2006. So hurry. […]
